Armed conflicts - Libya - Muammar Gaddafi - Rome - Unrest in the Arab world

Contact group concludes ‘successful’ Libya meeting

Flanked by representatives from co-hosts Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, Italy’s Foreign Minister Franco Frattini says the contact Group on Libya has taken solid steps forward following its second meeting, including approving financial aid.
He underlined the Group’s united aim was the removal of the Gaddafi family.

“The UN confirmed today via its special representative it is determined to co-ordinate efforts to try and obtain a ceasefire as quickly as possible and launch a clear political process.“
The next meeting is in Abu Dhabi, by which time the contact group hopes for more tangible progress on the ground and the unfreezing of at least some of the 40 billion euros of Libyan funds currently in foreign bank accounts, and their transfer to the rebel’s Transitional National Council.
