Some 300 original prints of Hungarian photographer Andre Kertesz have
just gone on show in Paris. The retrospective at the Jeu de Paume
gallery – which specialises in art photography – was timed to conincide
with the 25th anniversary of his death. He began his career in his
native Hungary, and at the time described himself as an amateur.
He was among numerous Hungarian artists who left the country after WWI, including Robert Capa and Man Ray.
He moved to Paris in 1925 because it was the place he thought would
best serve a career in photography. But when work opportuinities began
to dry up,Kertesz moved to New York.
The exhibition runs until next February.
