Sony has been in the console hardware business longer than Microsoft.
That’s a fact.
Many gamers and industry people also deemed that Sony
“won” the last two console generations, both in games diversity and in
actual units sold. It’s open for debate of course, but general consensus
is that Sony did - but what about this generation?
Microsoft’s seems to be “winning”
so far with its 52 million units sold globally compared to Sony’s 48
million units, but do keep in mind that the Xbox 360 had a full year’s
head-start on the PS3. This is an advantage slowly being negated by
Sony’s console as it inches closer to the 360’s global installed base
year-on-year.
However, networks are becoming more important nowadays and the
dynamics of the game business are ever-changing. Neil Young, founder of
mobile games publisher ngmoco, believes Microsoft is in a better
position for the future to handle these situations.
"In the hardware world, I think Sony’s massively out of position," Young said, speaking with IndustryGamers. "I think they’re in trouble. I think Microsoft’s in much better shape."
He also discussed cloud technology, the impact of digital distribution and mobile development.
"They [Microsoft] understand cloud computing; the Xbox Live service
is a world-class service, and they’ve got a foothold in mobile, albeit a
tenuous one," Young said. "I think they’re in better shape."
Young can think whatever he wants, but at least Sony has France in its corner.
