The number of people exposed to radiation from the quake-hit Fukushima
nuclear power plant in Japan may reach as high as 160, a Japanese
nuclear safety agency official said.
Nine people had already shown possible
exposure to radiation from the plant, based on information from tests by
municipal authorities and other sources.
Authorities suggested
the number exposed could now be as high as 160 people, the official from
the Japan Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency told a news conference.
Up to 140,000 people have been evacuated from zones around two power stations considered at risk.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said evacuations around both affected nuclear plants were underway.
A 12-mile radius was imposed on the Fukushima Daiichi plant with an estimated 170,000 people already evacuated.
A six-mile radius was in place around the Fukushima Daini station, with an estimated 30,000 people evacuated.
On
Saturday a 6.4 magnitude aftershock struck near the Fukushima plants -
hours after an explosion and radiation leak sparked fears a meltdown was
