Microsoft takes Google complaint to EU
Microsoft is to take an anti-competion complaint against Google to the European Commission.
The software maker claims that Google used its dominant position in
the search market to restrict the growth of Microsoft services.
It cites a number of practices, including Google limiting the ability of Microsoft Bing to index web content.
Google said it was not surprised by the move and would happily explain itself.
In a detailed blog, Microsoft's general counsel, Brad Smith, outlined the company's grievances.
He wrote: "Our filing today focuses on a pattern of actions
that Google has taken to entrench its dominance in the markets for
online search and search advertising to the detriment of European
consumers."
The post goes on to list five different ways in which Google, according to Microsoft, has sought to control the search market.
Those are:
- Using technical measures to stop Microsoft's search engine Bing from indexing content on Google-owned YouTube.
- Blocking Microsoft Smartphones from operating properly with YouTube.
- Controlling access to online copies of out-of-copyright books.
- Limiting the ability of businesses to reclaim "their own information" generated through Google advertising campaigns for use elsewhere.
- Compelling leading websites to only use Google search boxes on their pages.

Hugh Laurie: Can a white man really sing the blues?
Hugh Laurie will release a blues album in May called Let Them Talk, for which he has just played his first preview concert in New Orleans. Although he has been a talented pianist since his Footlights and Fry and Laurie days, his first major musical foray is raising eyebrows.
Will Laurie’s blues album actually be any good? He is an Anglo-Saxon male educated at Eton College playing a style of music traditionally the preserve of elderly African-American gentlemen, usually from the Deep South, telling of lives of privation and pain.
Laurie, replete with admirable humility, said:
I was not born in Alabama in the 1890s. I’ve never eaten grits, cropped a share, or ridden a boxcar. I am a white, middle-class Englishman, openly trespassing on the music and myth of the American south.

Brian May interview: Freddie is in my thoughts every day
Guitarist Brian May opens up about working with Queen’s charismatic singer – and the emotional aftermath of his death .
"If I am asked once more, 'What was it like working with Freddie?’, I will spew,” sighs Brian May, as he settles down in front of me. It is not the most auspicious of beginnings to our encounter, particularly since the subject is the 40th anniversary of Queen, whose late frontman, Freddie Mercury, remains a character of enduring fascination to the public.
To be fair, the 63-year-old guitarist is otherwise unfailingly polite, softly spoken and thoughtful in his responses, and genuinely endeavours to “delve deep and true”. But that truth includes an edge of ambivalence about the group who have dominated May’s musical life. “Queen cast a long shadow,” as he puts it.
“When Freddie died, it was like losing a family member, and we all handled it in different ways. For a time, I really wanted to escape fromQueen; I didn’t want to know about it. I think that was my grieving process. But I’m very proud of what we did together. My God, we really did go on some interesting excursions! Mostly, it makes me feel good.”
For a band who formed in 1971, and effectively came to an end when their frontman died in 1991, Queen remain extremely present in pop culture. Their Greatest Hits is the biggest selling album of all time in the UK and their musical, We Will Rock You, has been running for nine years in London’s West End. This month, Island begin re-releasing all their albums in deluxe formats, starting with the first five: Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. A Freddie Mercury movie is scheduled with Sacha Baron Cohen in the title role, and there is an exhibition at the Truman Brewery, London, Stormtroopers in Stilletos.

LONDON.- This morning at Sotheby’s in London , ten prints by Paul Gauguin from the Collection of Stanley J. Seeger, sold for £1.54 million ($2.47 million), almost four times the pre-sale low estimate for the group. A new auction record for a print by Paul Gauguin was achieved when Crouching Tahitian Woman Seen From The Back sold for £577,250 ($924,466), over three times the estimate (£180,000-220,000). The traced monotype, or ‘printed drawing’, was fiercely contested by a number of determined bidders, finally selling to a private collector on the telephone after a five-minute battle. Earlier in the sale, there was much excitement surrounding a pair of rare woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer – widely considered the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance. The earliest printed star charts, A Map of the Northern Sky and A Map of the Southern Sky, sold for £361,250 ($578,542) to Daniel Crouch Rare Books, over three times the low estimate. The price achieved established a new record for a woodcut by Dürer at auction.

Top 10 art exhibitions of the week
The best art exhibitions on now across the UK – Alastair Sooke and Richard Dorment's pick of the week.
1. Antoine Watteau | Royal Academy and Wallace Collection; until 5 June
Watteau’s influence on French art during the 18th century and beyond was profound. His chief contribution to art history was the invention of a strange, mercurial genre known as the fête galante, defined in a contemporary dictionary as “festivities by decent folk”.
The Wallace Collection in London has some of the finest examples. To complement the superb exhibition of his sketches at the Royal Academy, all eight of their canvases, plus two loans, are being shown in the West Gallery at the Wallace Collection’s home, Hertford House in west London.
2. Dieter Roth: Reykjavik Slides | Hauser & Wirth London, Savile Row | until 30 April
In love with Iceland's "housebuilding", German artist Dieter Roth (1930 - 1998) set out to photograph every building in Reykjavik, his home since 1957. The resulting 31,035 slides are shown all together for the first time.

Top of the Pops returns to BBC in original time slot
Top Of The Pops is returning to television screens five years after it was axed, with the BBC showing weekly reruns of classic shows in the programme's original time slot.
The much-loved live music show was a viewing staple for 42 years until it was dropped in 2006 after falling audiences.
But now the BBC is to draw on its huge cache to retransmit old editions of the programme, episode by episode, each Thursday night at 7.30pm from April 7 on BBC Four, the digital channel.
The series will start at 1976, the point at which the BBC's full archive of shows begins.
Although the series began in 1964, originally recorded in a Manchester church, many editions were famously lost or taped over in the days when TV stations were less rigorous about cataloguing their shows.
Individual performances have been used for editions of TOTP2, but they have rarely been shown in full. It is hoped the reruns will continue to run for subsequent years.
BBC4 controller Richard Klein said: ''Let's see how it goes.''

NEW YORK (REUTERS).- An intricate wooden bust carved by Paul Gauguin is expected to sell for as much as $15 million when it is auctioned on May 3, according to Sotheby's. "Jeune tahitienne," which was carved by Gauguin during his first trip to Tahiti between 1891 and 1893, depicts a young, unidentified Tahitian woman and includes jewelry which Gauguin made himself using seashells and pieces of red coral. A piercing left on the ear is believed by experts to have once held a flower, and two foxes carved in the back of the neck represent a sort of signature Gauguin often used, with the foxes being representative of sexuality. "It's rare to see a piece of art of such great quality and with such a great story," said Simon Shaw, Sotheby's head of Impressionist and Modern Art. "It's truly unique."

What should I wear to my crush's basketball tourney?
If you’re gonna spend a day rootin’ from the bleachers, it’s
key to dress casual and comfy. But, obvi, because your crush is there ya wanna
look c-u-t-e, too. We’ve got the scoop on exactly what to wear on the sidelines
(or for a day watching March Madness).
Rock team colors
You don’t have to paint your face, but sporting team colors
shows spirit. If your crush goes to your school, rep your team by wearing a tee
that’s emblazoned with the mascot or logo. If your cutie goes to another
school, simply wearing a tee or tank in one of their colors is cool (but don’t
go out and buy one of their shirts—that’s a bit over the top). We like the
collegiate line over at VS for when we wanna go a li’l athletic.
Arizona State V-Neck Tee, $32, victoriassecret.com
Toss on a loose sweater
Hole-y knits are hot for spring and, bonus!, this one will
keep you warm while you’re watching the guys. Something soft will show your
girly side.
Open Knitted Cardigan w/ Silk Trim, $23, forever21.com
Shimmy into your fave jeans
It’s tempting to wear a skirt (so cute!) but you’ll just end
up sticking to the bleachers or sitting awkwardly for hours (as a former
cheerleader, I can say that with confidence). Instead, opt for your fave denim.
You won’t be overdressed, you’ll feel totally comfy and will still look cute if
you guys go out post-game for pizza.
Bailey Low-Rise Flare Jean, $40, delias.com
Pick cute (but sensible!) shoes
We heart major heels too but, sadly, the gym is not the
place for them. Skip over the sneaks and slip into cute flats. These ones have
tons of texture.
Womens Rock & Candy by Zigi Soho Bermuda Casual Shoe – Silver, $40, journeys.com
Add some jewels
Ya don’t wanna go overboard with the bling, but wearing a
darling pendant necklace or a quirky bracelet will put a li’l more “you” in
your getup. Or keep the sporty vibe alive and deck your wrist in a plastic
watch.
Pineapple Hot Pink Digital Watch, $33, asos.com
7 Pop Stars Pretending To Be Metalheads
There are few things quite as annoying as inauthenticity. That's why
we're so annoyed with the idea of pop stars wearing metal band T-shirts.
I get that they're trying to grit up their image, but as Lemmy once
said, "I wish everybody who had the T-shirts had the albums." Of course, we don't actually know if Miley Cyrus owns all the Iron Maiden albums. But we'd bet our "Hannah Montana" DVDs she doesn't.
The idea of a musician wearing the T-shirt of an artist who sounds
nothing like them is equal parts fascinating and horrifying. So we
searched far and wide to find seven pop stars wearing shirts that honor
kickass bands they sound nothing like. At least they know how to pick
out a cool shirt. Actually, their stylists do that.

Microsoft creates giant 234″ interactive touch-screen
Microsoft has created a gigantic 234-inch touch-screen system for use at trade shows.
The software giant’s “Microsoft Cinema” display is the largest touch-screen in the world according to its creators. Microsoft partnered with Stereolize,
a firm who specialises in interactive multimedia presentations.
Stereolize built the impressive 234″ display from a single-piece of

Microsoft used its new display at CEBIT 2011, earlier this month.
Company spokespeople were able to present the latest details on Windows
Phone 7, Internet Explorer 9 and Office by swiping, flicking, panning
and tapping on the screen. Long Zheng notes that Microsoft’s presentations contain a large amount of Metro styling.

Adele equals Madonna album record
Adele has matched Madonna's record with nine weeks at number one in the UK album chart - the longest for a female solo artist.
Her second album, 21, has now spent the same length of time at the
top spot as Madonna's first greatest hits record, The Immaculate
Collection, in 1990.
The Londoner's debut album, 19, remained at number two.
Meanwhile in the singles chart, the singer's track Someone Like You climbed back up to number one.
Last week the song was toppled by Nicole Scherzinger's Don't
Hold Your Breath after previously spending four weeks at the top of the
chart.
Adele still has two other singles in the top 40 - Rolling in
the Deep at number nine and Make You Feel My Love at 36, the Official

The singer-songwriter is also enjoying continued success in

Natalie Portman's body double claims cover-up over who danced in Black Swan
Natalie Portman's body double for Black Swan has claimed the Oscar-winner only performed five per cent of the film's ballet moves.
Portman's fiancé and the film's choreographer stated that "85 per cent of that movie is Natalie", but body double Sarah Lane said she performed the intricate dance sequences.
"There are articles now talking about her dance double that are making it sound like [her body double] did a lot of the work, but really, she just did the footwork, and the fouettés, and one diagonal phrase in the studio," Benjamin Millepied said.
Lane, 27, claimed she is the victim of a "cover-up" and moviegoers have been misled as to how much dancing Portman actually did.

Note the 50 books you must read before you die by http://www.telegraph.co.uk
Which are your favorite books, and which books you have read from this list???
1 Ulysses by James Joyce
Only a “modern classic” could condense one man’s day into an experimental epic that takes years to plough through. If the early description of the protagonist going to the lavatory doesn’t make your eyes swim, the final 40 pages, untroubled by punctuation, will.
2 Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
The finest dystopic novel of the 20th century, coining such terms as “doublethink” and “thought crime”, but indirectly responsible for the rise of reality television and the career of Davina McCall.
3 Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Directly responsible for too many newspaper articles starting: “It is a truth universally acknowledged…”
4 Emma by Jane Austen
Often cited as Austen’s most flawless romance, but even the author had to admit she had created a heroine “whom no one but myself will much like”.
5 Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D H Lawrence
Infamous, explicit tale of an aristocratic woman and her gamekeeper that’s pompous and verbose more than it is naughty.
6 The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
Not nearly as bawdy or easy to understand as your English teacher promised (“Whan Zephirus eek with his sweete breeth…”). Plus no cover puff from Stephen Fry, so probably not worth reading.

Complex Presents: A World Map Of Video Game Villains
With Homefront out this week predicting how a unified Korea might just turn the U.S. into an occupied nation, it became clear to us how international relations can affect the gaming industry.
Gone are the days of all FPSes being either World War II or sci-fi; in
the new milennium, developers are on the hunt for enemies that are
speculative but still plausible. Either they're rooted in real-life
global hotspots (this spring's SOCOM 4 takes place around the
shipping lanes of Southeast Asia), or they bring favorite punching bags
into the future. Whether it's mercenaries, guerillas, or just insane
despots, gamers find themselves fighting against enemies the world
over—so we rounded up 20 shooters from the past 10 years and plotted who
exactly developers are singling out. Say hi to the bad guy!

PARIS.- The Musée d’Art Moderne offers a fresh appreciation of Kees Van Dongen (1877–1968), the dazzling, disconcerting painter who made his reputation in Paris in the 1920s. This is a comprehensive look at a multifaceted personality: the socially-conscious Dutchman ever ready to caricature and denounce, the avant-garde artist and iconic Fauve, and one of the Roaring Twenties’ leading figures on the trendy Paris scene. The exhibition includes and adds to “All eyes on Kees Van Dongen”, shown at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam (18 September 2010-23 January 2011). The exhibition is on display from March 25 through July 17, 2011.
