Three Pro Makeup Tricks to Try Now

The makeup artists of New York Fashion Week are up to their old tricks again.... That would be expertly transforming a bevy of models into the stunning, minimal, or wild catwalkers they need to be, show after show after show. And, it turns out they're given that "pro" title for a reason: They've got the art of makeup down to a science and can finesse a finished face in minutes, even amid the cramped, busy quarters backstage at Fashion Week. So, there's never been a better time to break out of your daily makeup routine and try these easy and worth-it makeup tips we picked up—straight from the sources.

Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer's Ultrafast Trick to Finding Your Perfect Lipstick Shade:
Maybelline isn't rolling out its new shade of nude lipstick until fall (a shiny, sheer nude created by Global Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer and used on models at Max Azria's fall '11 show), but we got a sneak peek of the color backstage and a super-easy tip from Willer on how to quickly assess how any lippy will look on you: "Try it first on the inside of your finger. It's the closest to how it will look on your lips."

For a similar look, try Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Nearly There, $7.49, available at CVS

Makeup Artist Tom Pecheux's Trick to Brightening Up a Dark, Smoky Eye:
Using a combo of a brownish-grey shadow called Keep Your Cool and a grey called Lady Grey (both new for fall 2011), Pecheux channelled Doo.Ri's minimal and sexy fall collection into a monochromatic Jane Birkin meets Patti Smith look with a hyper-blended out smoky eye. But what kept it from looking overly tired? A light swipe of white eyeshadow underneath the eye and white eyeliner along the waterline. '"The white will catch the light and make the eyes look darker, but not heavy."

MAC Eye Shadow in White Frost, $14.50, available at MAC; MAC Mega Metal Shadow in Centre Stage and Unflappable, $19.50 each, available at MAC; MAC Eye Kohl in Fascinating, $14.50, available at MAC.

Makeup Artist Daniel Martin's Tip on Making Your Foundation Look Flawless:
Even though Lancome makeup artist Daniel Martin worked off designer Chris Benz's Savannah-inspired, dark and witchy-themed Fall 2011 collection, creating a finger painted-on makeup look, he still gave models utterly flawless skin. And, we got him to share the secret to keeping your foundation looking picture-perfect: "After you apply foundation, blot it with a few blotting papers, then dust on powder to set your makeup."

Lancome Teint Miracle Foundation, $37, available at Lancome; Boscia Limited Edition Green Tea Blotting Papers, $10, available at Sephora.
