Sport news

The 2018 FIFA World Cup finals will be hosted by Russia. The decision was taken by the FIFA Executive Committee in a vote in Zurich today. Four European candidates – Belgium/Netherlands, England, Portugal/Spain and Russia – were in the running, following a bidding process which began in January 2009. The last FIFA World Cup to be held in Europe took place in Germany in 2006.

NBA - James pours in 38 on homecoming. It was not a warm homecoming but it was a spectacular one as LeBron James scored a game-high 38 points to lead the Miami Heat to a convincing 118-90 triumph over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Returning to Ohio for the first time since moving to Miami to form a super team with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, James received the hostile reception he expected from fans who booed him relentlessly from the moment he skipped onto the court until the final buzzer.

Liverpool stuttered to a 1-1 draw against Steaua Bucharest at the Stadionul Ghencea - but the result secured their passage to the Europa League's last 32. Milan Jovanovic's opener was the only ray of light in a dour first half. But Steaua Bucharest deserved their equaliser, even if it only came by virtue of an uncharacteristic blunder from Jose Reina.

Double Olympic champion Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway made a flying start to his biathlon World Cup campaign, storming to victory in the season-opening men's indivudal 20km in Ostersund, Sweden. The 25-year-old, who also has three world titles to his name, completed the 20km course in 55 minutes seven seconds to finish top of the podium after just two misses in the shooting round.
