Jorge Lorenzo topped the timesheets as Valentino Rossi failed to hit the ground running on his first ride on a Ducati MotoGP bike at testing in Valencia. New world champion Lorenzo stamped his authority on the first day of post-season MotoGP testing by riding the new #1 plate on his factory Yamaha 0.763 seconds quicker than any other rider, while Rossi (pictured) was tenth on his Ducati debut

Canadian Angela James and American Cammi Granato became the first women enshrined in the the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday. James, dubbed the "Wayne Gretzky" of women's hockey, and Granato, who captained the U.S. to a gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games where the sport made its Olympic debut, headlined a 2010 class that also included high-scoring winger Dino Ciccarelli and builders Jimmy Devellano and Daryl 'Doc' Seaman.

Roger Federer has backed calls to shorten the tennis calendar to protect players from burnout by creating a six week off-season. World number one Rafa Nadal, who has also said the season is too long, and top French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are among the high-profile absentees due to injury at the Paris Masters this week. "I think it's time we shifted back a bit and we get a proper off-season really," Federer, who has never got further than the quarter-finals, told reporters.
