Gaming analyst Michael Pachter has told IncGamers Sony must get Gran
Turismo 5 out before Christmas as a delay will ‘cost them a million in
sales’.
The Wedbush Morgan analyst said that up to 40% of all games are sold
during November and December and missing these months would be a costly
mistake.
Pachter said: “Clearly games get a boost from releasing before
the holidays, as around 35 - 40% of game sales happen in November
and December.
“The last announced launch date of November 2 was a perfect window
for them, and thought that the game would sell around 5 million before
the end of the year.
“Over the very long run, they can make up most of the lost sales, but
people who buy a racing game like Need for Speed instead may not be as
likely to buy a second later.
“So a slip out of holiday probably permanently costs them a million
in overall unit sales. I think that the game will sell over 5 million
regardless, probably close to 7 or 8 million, so it will be hard to
quantify the effect of a potential slip out of the holiday."
