 Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is "100%" confident of landing the Formula 1 drivers' title in the final race of the season, in Abu Dhabi on 12 November. The Spaniard is eight and 15 points clear respectively of Red Bull drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. Asked if he thought he could win the title, Alonso said: "100%. I just need to finish second. It doesn't matter who wins in Abu Dhabi if I finish second."

World cycling body UCI has asked the Spanish federation to begin disciplinary proceedings against Tour de France winner Alberto Contador. The three-time winner, 27, tested positive for banned drug clenbuterol during this year's Tour but he claims he was the victim of contaminated food.


Rafael Nadal has pulled out of this week's Paris Masters but insists he will be fit to take part in the season-ending ATP World Tour finals in London.The world number one is suffering from tendinitis in his shoulder and has been ordered to combine rest with intensive treatment for seven days until he can return to practice.

Ethiopian distance running legend Haile Gebrselassie has shocked the world of athletics by announcing his retirement. The 37-year-old dropped out of Sunday's New York City marathon with a knee injury then told reporters he had run his last race."I never think about to retire. But for the first time, this is the day," he said. "Let me stop and do other work after this."
