Ajax and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez faces censure for allegedly biting an opponent from PSV Eindhoven

Luis Suarez, the Ajax and Uruguay forward who caused controversy in South Africa when his deliberate handball effectively cost Ghana a place in the World Cup semi-finals, is in trouble again after appearing to bite an opponent in a Dutch league match.

Ajax are now under pressure to take disciplinary action against the forward after appearing to be caught on camera biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal in the teams’ 0-0 draw.

The referee did not see the incident in injury time of Saturday’s match and Suarez was not punished, but he could still face sanctions from the league.

Top-selling Dutch daily De Telegraaf branded Suarez the “Cannibal of Ajax” in its Monday edition and called for his club and the Netherlands Football Federation to take action.

Suarez was one of the stars of Uruguay’s run to the final four at the World Cup, scoring three times but blotting his performance with the widely criticised blocking of a last minute goal illegally in the dying moments of extra-time in their quarter-final with the African side.
