Northern army takes Sudan's Abyei region

Sudan’s northern army has taken control of the disputed Abyei region and is clearing it of southern troops, says Khartoum.
Oil-rich and fertile, Abyei is the main sticking point in the separation of Sudan, following January’s vote for independence in the south. Both sides are supposed to withdraw their troops from the region but the north accuses the south of maintaining forces there.
An estimated two million people have died in the country’s decades-long civil war.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Will Have A Story-Driven Single Player Campaign

Upon the revelation of Slant Six’s Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, fans were worried that they would be met with a purely multiplayer- focused title in their beloved franchise. Not just that, but this strong online focus lead many to believe that the actual single-player campaign will serve as nothing more than a tutorial of sorts to the multiplayer, with some cut-scenes thrown into the mix and, of course, the scenarios in which you can execute classic Resident Evil characters.  Thankfully, according to the game’s producer Masachika Kawata, that’s not going to be the case at all.
UK publication Play Magazine featured a preview for the upcoming title, they also had a chance to speak with Kawata. And, despite what we’ve been seeing thus far which all indicates a strong multiplayer focus, it seems that Operation Raccoon City will in fact boast a story-driven campaign like its predecessors. The following excerpt from Play’s interview with Kawata confirms this very notion:

Do the characters have their own personalities?

They do. We’re not focusing on campaign right now but rest assured that things you expect from Resident Evil– the awesome cut-scenes, the story, the Capcom characters– will definitely be there in full force. There are a lot of interesting touches you’ll find out, like why are these characters doing these dark deeds, why are they so bent on ensuring all the evidence against Raccoon is gone– all that stuff will be made clear. And individual characters– like why does Bertha carry stuff like scalpels and things like that, all that will be made clear.

Microsoft may buy Nokia’s Phone Division

Although Nokia and Microsoft already have a strategic partnership that sees the mobile device maker moving all of its operating system business over to Windows Phone 7, is it possible that there is more going on?
Eldar Murtazin, a well-known Russian tech blogger that is known for breaking stories about Nokia, has said that Microsoft is looking into buying the mobile phone division of the company.  According to Android and Me, the talks supposedly would start next week with a target of the deal being closed by the end of the year.  This would see Microsoft start producing its own handsets as well as licensing the operating system out to other companies such as HTC.
Despite Mr. Murtazin having a reputation for breaking Nokia stories early, the company seems to be taking umbrage at the rumor as demonstrated from the following tweet from Mark Squires, UK Communications Director for Nokia.

Learning world / Business education: softly softly

Success in business requires much more than a university degree. In this global era interpersonal skills, creativity and being able to think on your feet are more important than ever. At New York University’s Stern Business School they are teaching these so-called ‘soft skills’ through theatre arts, mime, clowning and improvisation.
NYU-Stern is an elite American business school and was one of the first to include soft skills in its MBA course.
As one MBA student at NYU-Stern said: “I think to be very successful, one great skill you have to have is to understand others. And try to read all the non verbal cues that people give. So I think this class will allow me to understand that a lot better and so that I can relate better to other people and be a good leader in the workplace.”
As economies around the world stumble towards economic recovery, the job market remains fiercely competitive. Opinion differs on whether or not it is possible to teach soft skills, but everyone agrees they are vital in the workplace.
Learning from someone else’s experience is one of the most effective ways to ensure a successful career in business. Jana Nurmukhanova is an advisor at NGO Technoserve, in Ghana. A national project there to mentor new start-ups is called BBB: Believe, Begin, Become.

Israeli reinforces borders after deadly naqba weekend

Along the border with Syria, several demonstrators are reported to have been killed and dozens wounded.
In the deadliest ‘naqba’ confrontations in years, Israel says it will keep clampdowns in place along its borders until midnight tonight.
This came after clashes between its troops and Arab protesters marking the founding of Israel in 1948, which the Palestinians call ‘naqba,’ or ‘catastrophe’.

Italy's local elections a big power test

A test of Italy’s faith in Silvio Berlusconi is in its second day, as the country votes in local elections. The most significant are in Turin, Naples, Bologna and Milan — Italy’s business capital and the prime minister’s home town.
A series of scandals and trials have pushed Berlusconi’s popularity rating down to a record low for him, roughly 30 percent.
Nearly a quarter of Italians are casting their ballot in more than 1,300 towns. This is the first two-day round, with a run-off on May 29 and 30.
The weak centre-left hopes to turn the tide. It feels ready to topple the centre-right city government in Milan over disappointment at failures by the incumbent mayor to modernise. Milan is Berlusconi’s business bastion and political starting out point.
On the first day of voting, turnout was down slightly at 52 percent, but there was no sign of voters massively shunning the election because of disillusionment as had been predicted by opinion polls.
Besides his legal woes, Berlusconi is also blamed for failing to revive Italy’s chronically low growth. Today is also the day of a court hearing for Berlusconi, into bribery charges. He denies any wrongdoing.

Penelope Cruz kept Johnny Depp on top of his game during Pirates Of The Caribbean film shoot

Working with Penelope Cruz kept Johnny Depp on his toes as he filmed the fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean film, he said at its UK premiere in London.

Depp, who plays Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was greeted by screams from hundreds of hysterical fans who had packed into London's Westfield shopping centre.
Wearing a charcoal suit and teal shirt, Depp signed autographs on the blue carpet, lit to resemble the sea.
Cruz, who was pregnant during the shoot, stars as Captain Jack's old flame Angelica, a female pirate, in the 3D film, released on May 18.

IMF boss denies sex assault charges

The head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been cuffed and taken for forensic testing accompanied by police.
The IMF chief is facing sexual assault charges and will appear in court when he is expected to plead not guilty.
The purpose of the hearing when it takes place will be to assess whether bail can be set and if so, under what conditions.
According to his lawyers Strauss-Kahn, who is one of the most powerful men in world banking, vigorously denies the three charges he is facing, including attempted rape.
William Taylor, Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer spoke to reporters:
“Our client consented to an examination tonight at the request of the government. That’s been done and in light of the hour we have agreed to postpone the arraignment until tomorrow morning and we expect to be here in court with him tomorrow.”
The charges relate to a complaint from a hotel chamber maid accusing the IMF chief of sexually assaulting her in his room. According to police, the alleged victim has formally identified Strauss-Kahn as her attacker. It is thought that despite the 62-year-old’s top job at the IMF he does not have diplomatic immunity from the charges which if proven carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Cannes Film Festival 2011: The Iron Lady shows Margaret Thatcher had a warm heart

The tagline for The Iron Lady reads: “She fought for control, she fought for her beliefs, she fought for her country. Beyond the power, beyond the ambition, lies the extraordinary story of an extraordinary woman.”
It is a terribly Hollywood billing for a very British Prime Minister. But that’s where the cheesiness ends. On the evidence unveiled in Cannes, this film does justice to its subject, highlight the genune emotion behind the stern reputation.
Meryl Streep’s transformation is remarkable. Instantly, one feels it is Lady Thatcher up there on screen. The actress is renowned for mastering accents but it is the combination of the voice, the mannerisms and the overall look that make her performance uncanny. Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher, on the other hand, looks exactly like Jim Broadbent.

Google's advertising system is being investigated by the US Justice Department, the company has revealed.
The internet search giant added that it had put aside $500m (£306m) to settle any potential charges.

ROUEN, FRANCE (AP).- A French museum has returned the mummified and tattooed head of a Maori to New Zealand officials after spending 136 years in a Normandy museum, a belated gesture to restore dignity to the first of 16 such human heads once displayed as exotic curiosities. Representatives of New Zealand's native Maori people sang traditional songs during an elaborate ceremony at Rouen City Hall to hand over the head to New Zealand diplomats, the first to be returned from of a total of 16 in France. "It's truly a solemn and symbolic day," New Zealand ambassador Rosmary Banks said. "We are very happy at the return" of the tattooed head after so many years in Rouen, Banks said. For years, New Zealand has sought the return of Maori heads kept in collections abroad, many of which were obtained by Westerners in exchange for weapons and other goods. Dozens of museums worldwide, though not all, have agreed to return them. Maori, the island nation's indigenous people, believe their ancestors' remains should be respected in their home area without being disturbed.

BRINK: Bestheda disappoints IGN

The news is not good, Brink's bet Bestheda not very pleased the staff of IGN, which is most disappointed that the game does not stand out in any aspect. Graphics, sound, gameplay, presentation, nothing can be above average and hitting the hammer concludes:
A shooting game online needs variety, depth and addictiveness to succeed in the long term. Brink can find a niche with some hardcore fans, but not for everyone. I'd love to see more of the game of parkour, but a mechanic is not enough to carry an entire game. Brink has a heart, but in general has many deficiencies in the complete package.
