Risor Festival, Wigmore Hall, review

This mini-festival with a hand-picked crew over from Norway give London audiences a treat indeed.

Every year, the Norwegian fishing village of Risor plays host to one of the world’s great chamber music festivals, and the best of it comes to London for a mini-festival at the Wigmore Hall. The festival’s director, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, brings over a hand-picked team mostly of fellow Scandinavians, though this year it also included that great Canadian virtuoso pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin.
If the previous concerts were at the stellar height of the final one, London audiences have had a treat indeed. It began with the hyper-compressed intensity of Berg’s Four Pieces for clarinet and piano, their arching gestures magnified by the balletic grace of clarinetist Martin Frost. He seemed to make Berg’s lonely phrases hang in the air long after the sound had faded, and Andsnes seized on the music’s sudden turns from spectral calm to violence.
The came Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a piece normally bedecked in the gorgeous colours of a large orchestra. But when played on two pianos, as it was here, the music takes on a new fascination, like a body seen under an x-ray machine. The two pianists Andsnes and Hamelin brought the best out of the monochrome medium, taking the hazy introduction to Part 2 at a much slower pace than any orchestra would dare, and the final “Danse Sacrale” at a thrillingly breakneck speed.

Music Video - My Chemical Romance album Danger Days!!

MTV and My Chemical Romance have teamed up with the latest LP - Danger Days: The True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys, Bryar's departure(2009-present) with exclusive live performances from your favorite alternative band.

Inside Music: New This Week - Black Eyed Peas, Chrisette Michele, Jazmine Sullivan, Flo Rida, Glee

Pop culture--especially fashion and music--moves in cycles, and from the looks of this week's line-up, 1987 is coming around again; two different releases recycle the climatic musical finale from "Dirty Dancing." And to think you scoffed when it was announced Jennifer Grey would be on "Dancing With the Stars."

The follow-up to the Black Eyed Peas unstoppable 2009 smash "The E.N.D." kicks off with "The Time (Dirty Bit)," which shamelessly bites a large chunk of "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," juxtaposed with a relentless electronic riff that sounds like a robot hornet trapped under glass.

According to will.i.am--who seems to be suffering from a pretty severe case of Puff Daddy-itis right now (see also: "Check It Out," the Nicki Minaj joint he fashioned from the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star")--retrofitting the sounds and grooves of early MTV classics with "sick, crazy beats" was a deliberate part of the quartet's new "The Beginning." In keeping with the dance floor-friendly vibe of recent hits like "I Gotta Feeling" and the new disc's pixilated cover art, these cuts are cartoon-ish and unapologetically slight. Fergie's spotlight turns on "Whenever" and synth-rocker "The Situation," however, left us more excited about the possibilities for her next solo album than these warmed-over Peas.

Nuclear Energy: North Korea details its nuclear prowess

North Korea has announced it is operating what it says are “thousands” of centrifuges at its uranium enrichment plant.
It is the first detailed admission of the secretive state’s expanded nuclear capability and will ratchet up already heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.
Internal struggles over the succession of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-il may well be the reason for the provocation. Analysts claim the defiance to international pressure is for its domestic audience.
It follows last week’s artillery barrage of a South Korean island which killed four people.
The moves will add to calls on China to rein in its ally and with the recent leaks of US diplomatic messages revealing Beijing is ready to ditch its friend, Pyongyang may be set for an increasingly isolated future.
The US and South Korea are currently holding joint military exercises off the peninsula’s west coast in a show of force which they say is to prevent Pyongyang from staging further acts of aggression.

Wikileaks: Washington is hit hard by Wikileaks

Washington is at the centre of a diplomatic crisis after the release of thousands of secret messages on the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks.
Advance notice of the cache of 250,000 so called cables were made available to a handful of newspapers.
Some of them include candid views of foreign leaders and blunt assessments of nuclear and terrorist threats.
Among the revelations are the opinions of Middle East leaders to Iran as well as reports that Israel is continually urging Washington to be strong against the country and its nuclear programme.
Other messages apparently disclosed that the US was happy to spy on the activities of the UN.
Having been told of the imminent leaks Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been urgently contacting foreign officials over the past few days to warn them of the disclosures.
Although some of the information can be considered harmless, security analysts agree the release of the documents is embarrassing to say the least especially the thoughts and criticisms levelled by US diplomats at its allies.

This year, the devil's not the only one wearing Prada...

Demand for luxury goods defies downturn as label's profits treble

If the world is tightening its belt, then it's made of luxurious Italian leather. Profits at fashion house Prada have trebled so far this year, boosted by sales of luxury items in Asian and American markets.
Rising unemployment and a crisis in the eurozone, not least in the label's home of Italy, have not affected the world's appetite for staggeringly expensive handbags and leather boots and shoes.
All four of the Prada Group's labels have contributed to the rise: Prada, Miu Miu, traditional British shoemaker Church's and designer moccasin makers Car Shoe.
Church's were among a number of high-profile acquisitions in the 1990s which left the company €1bn in debt. But Prada's attempt to increase revenue by expanding its network of shops has paid dividends.
It marks a significant step in the extraordinary journey of the company since it was taken over in 1978 by Miuccia Prada, now 61, granddaughter of Mario Prada, who opened the first Prada store in 1913, a leather goods shop in Milan.

Leslie Nielsen, comic actor and Airplane! star, dies

Veteran comic actor Leslie Nielsen, star of Airplane! and The Naked Gun, has died at the age of 84.

He died in hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was being treated for pneumonia, his agent John S Kelly said.
Canadian-born Nielsen started out as a serious actor but in 1980, his role as a hapless doctor in the disaster spoof film Airplane! made him a comic star.
In all, he appeared in more than 100 films and had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
"With his friends and his wife by his side, he just fell asleep and passed away," his nephew Doug Nielsen told the AFP news agency.

India's Ambani hosts party for 'world's priciest home'

Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani has hosted a lavish house-warming for his new 27-storey residence, believed to be the world's most expensive home.

About 80 people attended the party in Mumbai on Friday, reported the Times of India. One guest described the house as "the Taj Mahal of the 21st Century".
Mr Ambani, said to be India's richest man, moved into the house last month with his wife and three children.
Reports suggest the residence is worth more than $1bn (£630m).
The skyscraper in Mumbai (Bombay), which overlooks sprawling slums, is said to have a cinema, swimming pools and a helicopter pad, and is named "Antilia" after a mythical Atlantic island.
Local newspapers said the house would require 600 members of staff to maintain it, and according to the Times of India, the first electricity bill, for September, is costing Mr Ambani 7m rupees (£98,000).
The house has sparked some controversy, with anti-poverty campaigners underlining the contrast between the luxury of the house and the plight of those who live in Mumbai's slums, which house about half of the city's 18 million people.

Gaga among stars quitting Facebook for charity

Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Usher are among stars signing off social media including Facebook and Twitter in aid of singer Alicia Keys' charity.

The campaign Digital Life Sacrifice will raise money on Wednesday - World Aids Day - for Keep a Child Alive, which supports families affected by HIV/Aids in Africa and India.
The celebrities have filmed "last tweet and testament" videos.
They will sign back online when the charity raises $1 million.
Their videos will appear in adverts showing them lying in coffins to represent what the campaign calls their digital deaths.
Grammy-winning singer Keys, 29, said it was "really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on".
"It's so important to shock you to the point of waking up," the R&B singer said. "It's not that people don't care or it's not that people don't want to do something, it's that they never thought of it quite like that."

DiCaprio says "Inception" script was "confusing"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – The making of "Inception" presented an immense technical challenge for the cast and crew -- starting with comprehending director Christopher Nolan's complex dream-caper script.

Star Leonardo DiCaprio told The Hollywood Reporter that even he needed time to figure out the many layers of the story.

"I needed to know implicitly where we were," he said. "It got incredibly confusing at certain points in the beginning, but the more we talked, the more I understood."

DiCaprio, who played the lead role of Dominic Cobb, spent weeks combing through the script with Nolan.

"The work (DiCaprio) did on his character with Chris made the movie less of a puzzle and more of a story of a character audiences could relate to," said Emma Thomas, Nolan's wife and producing partner.

Gran Turismo 5 tested on Top Gear race track by gamers

After months of delays and five years in development Gran Turismo 5 is released in the UK today (24 November).

It's PlayStation's most successful racing game series, selling 56 million copies since the first edition hit the shops in 1997.

But how does it compare to the real thing and does it match up to the competition; titles like Forza Motorsport 3, F1 2010 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit?

We've taken two Radio 1 listeners down to the Top Gear test track (which has been included in Gran Turismo for the first time) and to Sony HQ in London to give Newsbeat their verdict.

Black Eyed Peas to perform at the Super Bowl

The Black Eyed Peas are to perform during the interval at the Super Bowl next year, organisers have said.

The Grammy award-winning group will play at the championship game on 6 February at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Last year's game, which featured The Who at half-time, was the most-watched programme in US TV history with 106.5 million viewers.
Previous acts have included the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, U2 and Prince.
The half-time show of Super Bowl in 2004 created controversy when Justin Timberlake ripped a piece of Janet Jackson's top, resulting in a glimpse of her right breast.
The pair said the incident was accidental, calling it a "wardrobe malfunction", but broadcaster CBS TV was fined $550,000 (£351,000) after hundreds of complaints from viewers.
The fine was subsequently revoked in July 2008.

PC 'rebuilds Rome in a day' using pictures from Flickr

3D models of famous landmarks such as Rome's Colosseum have been recreated using millions of pictures from photo-sharing websites such as Flickr.

The images were analysed by a modified home PC and detailed models created in less than a day.
The team behind the system think it may help preserve heritage sites, ensuring they don't end up swamped by tourists.
It was created by a team of researchers from the University of North Carolina and the Swiss university ETH-Zurich.
The technique of using millions of photos to recreate detailed scenes has previously been demonstrated by Microsoft with its PhotoSynth technology.
But these other systems have needed powerful clusters of computers to perform the necessary image analysis, said Professor Marc Pollefey.
His team used a home PC, albeit one equipped with four powerful graphics cards.
The cards were the key to being able to do the huge number of calculations necessary, said Prof Pollefey.
The first task was to identify pictures on Flickr tagged with the word "Rome".

 2. Aphrodite's Hat by Salley Vickers
Love is fleeting - is the underlying theme of this collection, with most of the protagonists either enduring, escaping or destroying unsatisfactory relationships. Aphrodite's Hat is shot through with a gentle wit and a winning charm.

Born Brilliant serves as the title, but “Born Bitchy” would do just as well. In this book Williams is shown to be as pathologically selfish as he was gregarious, and as fastidious as he was filthy. Christopher Stevens has combed his stories for the authorised biography and the spectacular bile Williams reserved for his private memoirs makes it a rare one – intimate and cosily enjoyable, yet laced with the very poison its debonair subject secretly uncorked.

N Korea warns war games take region to 'brink of war'

North Korea has warned that the impending joint military exercises by the South and the US are pushing the region to "the brink of war".

A group of naval ships, led by a nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier, is heading to the Yellow Sea to take part in the drill, due to begin on Sunday.
At least four people died on Tuesday when the North surprised Seoul by shelling a southern island.
The incident has led to the South replacing its defence minister.
Kim Kwan-jin, 61, a former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, replaces Kim Tae-young, who resigned after criticism that he was too slow to respond to the attack on the island of Yeonpyeong.
The barrage of shells, which killed four South Koreans, is one of the worst incidents between the two Koreas since the end of the Korean war in 1953, which concluded without a peace treaty.
"The situation on the Korean Peninsula is inching closer to the brink of war due to the reckless plan of those trigger-happy elements to stage again war exercises targeted against the [North]," the North's official KCNA news agency said.

LONDON.- This autumn the Serpentine Gallery presents Philippe Parreno’s first solo exhibition in a public institution in the UK. Parreno rose to prominence in the 1990s, earning critical acclaim for his work, which employs a diversity of media including film, sculpture, performance and text. Taking the exhibition as a medium, Parreno has sought to redefine the exhibition experience by exploring its possibilities beyond a collection of individual works.  Parreno’s exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery has been conceived as a scripted space in which a series of events unfolds. The visitor is guided through the Galleries by a timeline of orchestrated sound and image. Noise from Kensington Gardens is heard inside, as though the outside is leaking into the Gallery. The window blinds move automatically to reveal sudden change of weather.

Artist has camera implanted in his head

A tiny camera has been surgically implanted to the back of a New York University professor's head – all in the name of art.

Visual artist Wafaa Bilal teaches at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He had the surgery for a project called "The 3rd I." It has been commissioned by a new museum in Qatar that opens on Dec 30.

It is one of 23 contemporary works commissioned for the opening of the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition is entitled "Told/Untold/Retold." I am going about my daily life as I did before the procedure," the Iraqi-born artist said in a statement.Bilal, who is teaching three courses this semester at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, will wear the camera for one year. It is 2 inches in diameter and less than an inch thick. The project will raise "important social, aesthetic, political, technological and artistic questions," he said.

He declined to say when the camera was implanted or other details of the art installation, saying it "will be revealed to the public as part of the museum preview on Dec. 15" and on a website to be launched on the same day.He said he chose to have it put in the back of the head as an allegorical statement about the things we don't see and leave behind. How it all fits together is still a bit of a mystery. The camera will capture his everyday activities at one-minute intervals 24-hours a day and then be transmitted to monitors at the museum, said curators Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath of Art Reoriented, who commissioned Mr Bilal on behalf of the museum.NYU is concerned about how the artwork will impact students. It says it is talking with Mr Bilal about how best to protect privacy.

Pink Floyd reunion is scuppered by Jemima Khan

Nick Mason says he refused to take part in a Pink Floyd reunion because it would take place at Jemima Khan's country house.

Despite her undoubted charms, Jemima Khan has failed to win over Nick Mason, the Pink Floyd drummer.
Mason has disclosed that he pulled out of what would have been Pink Floyd's second reunion in almost 30 years after he discovered that Sir James Goldsmith's daughter owned the Oxfordshire house, Kiddington Hall, where the concert was to be held.
"That particular event wasn't right for a reformation of Pink Floyd," says Mason. "I said I would do it, but it was a charity event for suits, and it felt wrong to turn a small thing into a big deal just because Jemima Khan was in attendance. "Why play for a lot of posh totty instead of some of the other things we should save that up for – a Live 8 type of thing?"

The Tallest Building In the World From the Highest Resolution Satellite Around the World

The Burj Khalifa—which Tom Cruise likes so much—is complete, a needle of glass surrounded by turquoise water in the middle of the desert. Here's how the complex looks, photographed by GeoEye 1, the highest resolution imaging commercial satellite.
GeoEye 1 is at an altitude of 684 kilometers over the surface of the Earth, and it's capable of capturing details of just 16 inches long in black and white, and 64 inches in color. That's probably myopic compared to the latest spy satellites, but good enough for the rest of us to go all ooh and aah in Google Maps. [New Scietist]

The Best Spring 2011 Looks for Every Occasion

During fashion week, while sitting at the shows with my editor friends from Teen Vogue and other magazines, I often like to play the game I call "Pick Your Prom Dress." Though we are all well beyond our school-dance years, I'd say may of us regret our prom-dress choice and would love a dream do-over with perhaps that perfect party dress from Oscar de la Renta. I could easily tell you my favorite looks from all the shows so far but I think it's more fun to apply them to how I'd wear them in real life. Though my favorite Paris designers have yet to show, I had plenty to pick from from New York, London and Milan. Here is my prom-dress pick as well as a few more. Analysis: Can the euro survive?

So what now for the euro? As investors set their sights on the eurozone’s weakest members, are the days of the single currency numbered?
Euronews’ Tokunbo Salako spoke to Stephen Gallo, market analyst at Schneider Foreign Exchange.
Euronews: ‘‘This crisis seems to have been sparked by comments from Germany. What can prevent this contagion spreading to Portugal, Italy or even back to Greece?’‘
Stephen Gallo: ‘‘Yes, I would agree with you. A lot of stress within the Irish sovereign debt markets was triggered by comments from Germany. Germany seems to want to convince markets that it’s willing to go along the lines of a “haircut” for investors in a number of these peripheral sovereign debt markets. And since that has been put on to the table, markets have pretty much unanimously agreed that a lot of this debt is overpriced. So, you have contagion risks on the one hand and political risks on the other. Both are creating a firestorm for the euro in the short run.’‘
Euronews: ‘‘So what action, if any, can countries take in the face of this spreading contagion?’‘
Stephen Gallo: ‘‘It’s unlikely that policy makers are going to be able to prevent contagion altogether. This is going to be something the euro is going to continue battling against for at least the next three to six months.’‘
Euronews: ‘‘So, things are going to get worse before they get better?’‘
Stephen Gallo: ‘‘Absolutely. If this project is going to work, and I currently believe that it will, my longer term view is that the euro project will survive; it is almost surely going to be one of the most expensive projects in history to keep going, to keep alive. It’s going to cost money in terms of fiscal transfers from the core of Europe, it’s going to involve structural changes for a number of economies. At the moment, in the short run, there doesn’t seem to be any flexibility in terms of exit from the euro zone.’‘
Euronews: ‘‘But you do think the euro’s going to survive?’‘

Trapped miners in NZ believed ti be dead

The families have received the worst possible news.
Relatives of 29 trapped miners in New Zealand have been told there is no chance the men survived after a second explosion in a South Island coal mine.
Hope had been fading for the miners ever since surveillance camera footage showed the strength of a first blast on Friday.
The Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, said: “This is a national tragedy. A tragedy for the men’s families, for their workmates and friends, for their community and our nation. New Zealand is a small country, a country where we are our brothers’ keeper, so to lose this many brothers at once strikes an agonising blow.”
Some families are angry that rescuers did not enter the mine straight after the first explosion.
Laurie Drew, the father of one of the victims, said: “Well, the company has got what it wanted, they had the window of opportunity that Friday night and now the truth can’t come out because no one alive will be able to come out and tell the truth about what went on down there.”
Some families say straight after the first explosion the deadly mix of gases would’ve been consumed, making a rescue possible. But that is a theory rejected by officials.

Environment: The future's bright, the future's Tiger

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Wen Jibao have vowed, along with other Asian leaders, to try to double the wild tiger population by 2022.
